Derail
Portable Derails are a rail safety device designed to limit the movement of a car/train beyond a fixed point. Portable Derails are not left in place as are Derails and they are re-usable. NARP supplies new Portable Derails only.
As is the case in common North American practice, derails and portable derails are defaulted to the “On” position, seeing as the consequences of unauthorized or dangerous rail traffic proceeding past a derail position is considerably higher than having such rail traffic proceed with the derail. Considering this, portable derails are an extremely popular rail product, in prevalent use across North America. The bonus of having portable derail products is that they are reusable, and as their name suggests, transferrable to different locations along a given railway.
Portable derails are an essential safety product for all types of railway, and at North American Rail Products, we’re pleased to help you select the portable derail best suited for your applications. Call us today and we’ll help answer any questions you may have about portable derails.

Steel Ties
Steel ties are a durable and strong alternative to traditional wood and concrete ties, offering excellent support and stability, especially in heavy freight operations. They require less maintenance due to their resistance to decay and pests, and their lighter weight simplifies installation and reduces transportation costs. Although initially more expensive than wood ties, their longevity and lower maintenance needs make them cost-effective over time. Additionally, steel ties can be recycled, contributing to sustainability.

Wood Ties
Wood ties offer good flexibility, effectively absorbing shocks and vibrations from passing trains. They are generally less expensive upfront compared to steel and concrete ties and are easier and quicker to install due to their lighter weight and ability to be cut or drilled on-site. Readily available with a long history of use in the railroad industry, wood ties are a familiar choice. However, they require regular maintenance and treatment to prevent decay, rot, and insect damage. While made from a renewable resource, the treatment chemicals used can have environmental impacts.

Concrete Ties
Concrete ties are extremely durable, offering a long service life and resistance to weather, pests, and decay. They provide excellent load distribution and stability, making them ideal for high-speed and heavy-load railways. With low maintenance requirements, concrete ties can reduce long-term operational costs. Though heavier than wood and steel ties, complicating transportation and installation, their durability and low maintenance can make them cost-effective over time. Made from natural materials, their production is energy-intensive, but they are often recyclable, contributing to environmental sustainability.
